Chairman Blount, District 19 Newsletter Highlights Youth Sports

Youth Athletics in District 19

(with a friendly co-district cameo from District 17)

Before we get started, full transparency: I know a few of these outstanding youth organizations also operate in areas that technically fall within District 17. And I also know Councilor Joey Russo is just as committed to supporting youth athletics in northern Greenville County as I am. So let’s call this a “co-district” section, because when it comes to kids, lines on a map don’t really matter!

Across District 19 (and a little beyond), youth athletics are experiencing renewed energy thanks to volunteers, parents, and community leaders who believe deeply in giving our kids positive, structured places to grow.

Northwest Little League (NWLL)

One of the cornerstones of youth baseball in our area is Northwest Little League, serving families throughout northern Greenville County. NWLL emphasizes fundamentals, sportsmanship, and providing a safe, welcoming environment where kids can learn the game of baseball while building confidence and friendships that extend well beyond the diamond.

Northwest Little League continues to grow and depends heavily on volunteers, coaches, and community support to keep programs strong and accessible for families.

Travelers Rest Rockies

Another growing baseball organization making a positive impact in our community is the Travelers Rest Rockies, a select youth travel baseball program focused on skill development, teamwork, and competitive play at a higher level.

Unlike traditional recreational leagues, the Rockies do not operate open sign-ups. Roster spots are filled through tryouts, and when openings become available, the organization makes a strong effort to prioritize local families from Travelers Rest and the surrounding northern Greenville County area. This approach helps maintain a high standard of play while keeping the program rooted in the community it represents.

I also want to note that I personally know Coach Brandon Ellison, one of the leaders involved with the Rockies, and I can attest to both his integrity and his genuine passion for the game of baseball. Knowing the character and commitment he brings gives me confidence that this organization, and the young athletes it serves, are in very good hands.

Berea Youth Athletic Association (BYAA)

In Berea, the Berea Youth Athletic Association has been revived through grassroots community effort, with a renewed focus on expanding youth sports opportunities right here at home. BYAA is rebuilding programs that emphasize teamwork, discipline, confidence, and positive coaching, starting with flag football and with plans to continue growing as participation increases.

“We are proud to serve the youth and families of Berea and the White Horse Road community, providing opportunities for growth both on and off the field.”

Families and volunteers can stay connected and get involved through:

The renewed energy around BYAA is a strong reminder of what can happen when a community rallies around its kids.

Travelers Rest Youth Association (TRYA)

The Travelers Rest Youth Association remains a pillar of youth athletics in our community, offering football, cheer, and other programs that prioritize safety, sportsmanship, and character development.

You can learn more about TRYA:

I’m honored to have been selected to serve as President of the Travelers Rest Youth Association Board. I want to extend a huge thank you to Brad Pochard for his trust in me to step into this role. Brad’s many years of experience and steady leadership have helped establish strong processes and a solid foundation for TRYA, and I will be leaning heavily on his guidance and institutional knowledge as we continue moving forward.
